Countries Have an Opportunity to Boost Production

The recent announcement by SAG-AFTRA about their general strike of the TV and motion picture industry in America undoubtedly caused dismay among movie and TV lovers all over the globe, although they may support the reasons for the strike. Popular TV shows and movies are ceasing production, and the lights on many sets are going dark as a result.

For streaming services that offer their services in many countries around the globe, the actual costs of the strike may not be seen for quite a while. Netflix, HBO, Disney and other streaming services often have productions in the pipeline that may be released several months later. But if the strike continues for a year or more, it offers other countries a chance to increase the viewership of programs and films by their home-grown talented filmmakers and actors.

Other Countries Chance to Shine

Many countries are emerging as TV and movie powerhouses. They deliver well-written and conceived productions that offer a different viewpoint. Indian cinema has long been a valuable industry that’s loved by people all over the world.

New Zealand exploded into the consciousness of movie lovers with the depth and scope of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of The Rings trilogy, and Taika Waititi is the country’s latest filmmaker with global appeal. The Nordic countries, as well as Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the UK, have well-developed industries that have an opportunity to increase their viewers on a global scale. In Asia, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines are also in contention.

While the success of other countries may be viewed as taking advantage of the strike, it might also cause American corporations to realize they’re not the only ones able to deliver quality productions. It might force them to back away from their unreasonable proposals and demands. It could make the industry more equitable on a worldwide basis.
