Taylor Swift May Have Gotten Too Greedy
Taylor Swift has had a remarkable couple of years. Her Eras tour has broken attendance records around the world and become an economic phenomenon that benefits the countries it lands in.
Recently, we heard the news that Swift is set to become a billionaire behind all the revenue channels that her musical career has developed, including music, merchandise, and movies of her performances. There are only a handful of billionaire musicians, Jay-Z, Sean Puffy Combs, Rihanna, Paul McCartney, Andrew Lloyd Webber and the late Jimmy Buffett among them. Nobody begrudges those musicians from parleying their music into enterprises that have earned them stratospheric incomes.
But there’s been some grumbling from the masses lately about Swift’s tactics in generating music revenue, and the increasingly loud grumbling is coming from the fans that vaulted her into billionaire status in the first place – the Swifties.
Ever since her Eras tour picked up steam and made her the world’s most in-demand performer, she has released an almost endless amount of “exclusive” merchandise. The constant merch drops have soured her most loyal fans and earned her the new nickname of “capitalist queen.”
Swift has been known for her generosity in the way she treats her staff, musicians, and crew. Her fans have been loyal partly because of the compassion and accessibility she exhibits in the way she conducts herself. But everyone has their breaking point. And it seems like the Swifties are feeling a bit used in the face of the billions they’ve put in their idol’s pocket.
Swift has the ability and momentum to stay on top of the music world for many years. But she should be wise, listen to the murmurs of her biggest fans and dial back the cash grab. She obviously doesn’t need the money anyway.
